Appleton is located approximately 30 mi (48 km) south of Lake Michigan on the
shores of the Fox River. Over 20 community and neighborhood parks are available
for public daytime use, each featuring recreational and picnic opportunities.
Additional outdoor attractions include the Gordon Bubolz Nature Preserve, the
Memorial Park Arboretum & Gardens as well as two golf courses. A large cultural
community resides within the town, resulting in numerous exhibits and interactive
displays found at the Bergstrom-Mahler Museum, the Hearthstone House Historical
Museum and the Paper Discovery Center. The Outagamie Museum and Houdini Historical
Center and the Abracadabra Magic Shop both celebrate and exhibit the life of
famous escape artist and magician Harry Houdini, whose hometown since infancy
was Appleton. Laurence University, an undergraduate college of liberal arts
and science, is also located within Appleton and offers guided campus tours.
